Savings box of Japanese Inari god clay doll (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Scarce type of original old man figure of Inari god with plenty of sheaves of rice-plants as a god of harvests, then transformed to fox figure as the icon in later years. Hollow clay saving box as a souvenir of Inari shrine for the visitors, enshrined at household Shinto altar for long years in smoke-stained condition (with a chip at bottom) of everyday life. Unused as saving box, with no coins. Meiji – Early Showa period, 19th – Early 20th century. approx. H 13.5cm (5.31in), W 16.3cm (6.41in)
