RYUJIN OF SHUGENDO (Dealer: hotoke) – The calligraphy of single Chinese character of ‘Ryu’ (Dragon) which stands for ‘Ryujin’ (Dragon god) in ‘Shugendo’ (Japanese mountain asceticism-shamanism incorporating Shinto and Buddhist concepts) of ‘Dewa sanzan’ (Three sacred mountains of Dewa in Yamagata prefecture), as a fire prevention (as Dragon god = Water god) which was given to the people by a mountain ascetic named ‘Renkai’ (lit. Lotus sea) when going down the mountain. 19th century. The condition is as seen, with predictable damage for use and age.
