THREE WEIRD OTAFUKU MASKS (Dealer: titcoRet) – Lovely three faces that look like smiling or not, as old Japanese wood carving masks of ‘Otafuku’ as homely and cheery woman who brings many happiness, has also sexual connotation, and is known as a fertility symbol in Shintoism as well. Meiji-Taisho period, early 20th century. Lower mask in the first photo: approx. 20.5 x 14 x D 4.5cm (8.07 x 5.51 x 1.77in). Some cracks and peelings of gofun (white pigment) due to aging as is.
