OLD MUKUROJI PRAYER BEADS (Dealer: titcoRet) – Old Japanese prayer beads made from mukuroji (soapberry) seeds, traditionally used as gyōja juzu—practical rosary beads associated with Shugendō ascetic practitioners. Japan, Meiji period to early Shōwa period (late 19th–early 20th century). Total length when fully extended approx. 170+ cm (66.9+ in). Composition: 1 main bead, 2 intermediate beads, 14 large beads, and 11 small beads.
Mukuroji literally means “child without misfortune,” and the seeds have long been used as ritual objects symbolizing protection, warding off evil, and spiritual guardianship. Age-related wear is present throughout. As these are old, dried seeds, exposure to strong direct sunlight may cause cracking; some beads may already show minor losses or damage. Condition as shown. *The wood carving hand shown in images is not included.
