HITOGATA (Dealer: titcoRet) – A rare wooden hitogata ritual effigy (literally “human shape”) used in purification rites, in which a substitute figure would receive misfortune or evil in place of a person before being cast into water or buried in the earth. Japan, Edo period (19th century or earlier). Approx. 7.3 × 2.5 × 1.2 cm (2.9 × 1 × 0.5 in). Most examples did not survive such use, and this piece may have remained unused. Though reminiscent of a small Buddhist figure, its kimono-like form and simple non-standing construction are characteristic of hitogata. Age-related wear is present. Condition as shown.
