ANESAMA NINGYO – Japanese kimono-clad textile paper dolls 19c (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Simply structured yet elegant dolls called ‘Anesama Ningyo’ as the girl’s toy made of washi paper and textile, loved by the children of affluent merchants and samurai originally from the Edo period.
The collection of four dolls with kimono textile, three dolls with paper kimono, papier mache rabbit, and silk wrapping cloth (‘fukusa’) in the box with unique ‘Ukiyoe’ design of “Civilization and Enlightenment” of Japan’s Westernization movement during the Meiji period in 19th century.
