JAPANESE WOMAN 1922
JAPANESE WOMAN 1922 (Dealer: hotoke) – A scarce example of an early Japanese Western-style oil painting on canvas, by an unidentified student of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts), depicting a traditional Japanese woman. Likely dated to Taishō 11 (1922), based on other similar paintings found together, whose reverses are all dated Taishō 11. Approx. 38 × 45 cm (15 × 17.7 in). Only a few Japanese words, including “To my parents” and “Tomorrow,” can be clearly identified. The canvas has been removed from its wooden stretcher. Age-related damage and deterioration are present, as shown. *The canvas was held in place with magnets when photographed, so no new holes were made for the photography.*
