BUDDHA’S HEAD (Dealer: misakadou) – Refined early Buddhist wood carving head of ‘Nyorai’ Buddha with ‘gyokugan’ crystal eyes made in Kyoto or its environs dated back to the Kamakura-Nambokucho period, 13-14th century, by considering of its lumber (material), its lines of carving, and its sophisticated face. Coming from a Buddhist art collector in Japan as its latest provenance, and originally it must be the one of rare fragments of Buddhist sculptures flown out from the temple to the public because of ‘haibutsu kishaku’ (anti-Buddhist movement at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912)). Unfortunately with saw-marks as seen. But hardly existed such early type today.
