EBISU NAGAREBUTSU (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Wood carving Ebisu (God of wealth) image exposed to the weather as a ‘nagarebutsu’ (lit. flowing Buddha) which had been kept on deifying to place on ‘kamidana’ (household Shinto altar) wreathed in the soot and dust from ‘irori’ (hearth) or kitchen oven. Edo-Meiji period, 19th century, Japan. approx. H 22.5cm (8.85in). Not standable on the flat surface. besides soot and dust. In sooty condition (as your hands will be stained when touch), with dust and worm‐eaten holes as is.
