FACE OF PORTRAIT SCULPTURE (Dealer: misakadou) – Here is a Buddhist wooden portrait sculpture as seen many examples after Kamakura period (1185-1333) in Japan, and it would be the one of many Buddhist sculptures flown out from the temple to the public because of ‘haibutsu kishaku’ (anti-Buddhist movement at the beginning of the Meiji period (1868-1912)). Unidentified model as a face of statue, probably dated back to the Nambokucho-Muromachi period (1336-1573) for its style. Small holes at eyelid. Missing ‘gyokugan’ (crystal eyes) which supposed to be. Small type, but such calm expression with quite strong presence as is. Very rare. approx. H 10cm (3.93in), W 5.5cm (2.16in), D 2cm (0.78in)
