FIRE-PROTECTING FISH (Dealer: titcoRet) – A wooden fish-shaped crosspiece from an old Japanese irori (hearth), attached to the pole of a jizai-kagi (adjustable hearth hook) to adjust its height. Meiji period, circa late 19th–early 20th century. Japan. Approx. 31.5 × 11 × 6.5 cm (12.4 × 4.3 × 2.6 in). The primitive form and charming expression give it a distinctive character. Fish, being creatures of water, were traditionally associated with protection against fire. Removed from the hearth of an old house in Niigata Prefecture, with the original straw binding still attached. Age-related wear is present. Condition as shown.
