GANDO (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Gando lantern made of bamboo frame coated with paper and iron handle, used much as a flashlight. Edo period, 19th century, Japan.
The inside candle never disappeared because of the structure with two gyros which keep the candle vertical so regardless of how swung it. Gando was often used by both of the thief who trespass on a stranger’s property and the police who chase the thief, so that it also called ‘Gando chochin’ (lit. ‘Thief lantern’). Expected aged deterioration and distortion as is.

approx. H 27cm (10.62in), D 25.5-27.5cm (10.03-10.82in)
