GODDESS OF RICE FIELD (Dealer: titcoRet) – Unique old Japanese calligraphy of a goddess of rice field with a sickle in the right (hand) and ears of rice in the left in *’Hihaku-tai’ (Blurring-brush style) on paper mounted as a hanging scroll praying for good harvest. Very rare type of rice field god as female, thickly and boldly written at center chest (mind) as “God of ‘Ota’ (also called Mita or Omita or Onta or so on, means the rice field belonging to temples/shrines or imperial family)”. Edo-Meiji period, 19th century. Total: approx. 93 x 23cm (36.61 x 9.05in). Damaged condition due to age as is as seen.
*’Hihaku-tai’ – Unique graffitical style of decorative kanji calligraphy originated by Cai Yong (132-192 / a Chinese scholar of the Eastern Han Dynasty, who was well-versed in calligraphy, music, mathematics and astronomy), brought to Japan by Kukai (774–835 / a Japanese Buddhist priest, civil servant, scholar, poet, and artist) in after years.
