BENKEI – Old Japanese mingei straw gourd object (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – ‘Benkei’ as a mingei folk art piece of hanging straw cooking device for making preserved food of skewered fishes by smoke of sunken hearth, from Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku region, early 20th century.
Named from its skewered figure itself which reminds of arrow-sticking death of ‘Benkei’ (a famous historic Japanese warrior monk, 1155–1189) in a battle scene.
Although the design of gourd as a spell for protection against fire would be natural and appropriate for fireplace, the form of gourd for Benkei must be unusual as a very scarce piece hardly seen.
In smoke-stained condition as is (sooted when touch it), and some damages as seen.
approx. H 60cm (23.62in)
