HEAD OF RIKYU (Dealer: misakadou) – Wood carving head of Sen no Rikyu (1522-1591) as an unfinished trial piece by ‘busshi’ Japanese Buddhist sculptor, with Indian-ink sign of “Master busshi, Daitokuji-temple, *Kinmokaku gate, Head of Sen no Rikyu, One-tenth”. Edo period, 18th century, Japan. approx. H 13.5cm (5.31in), W 8cm (3.14in), D 8.5cm (3.34in)

*Kinmokaku gate (lit. Golden hair tower) of Daitokuji-temple: associated with the death of Sen no Rikyu, one of the most famous historical master of the Japanese tea ceremony (chanoyu), who was ordered to perform ‘sepukku’ ritual suicide by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598).
