KAMAGAMI-SAMA OF TOHOKU 01 (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Very rare votive mingei folk mask as the guardian god of kitchen called ‘Kamagami-sama’ (or just ‘Kamagami’) seen only in the exclusive area in Tohoku region (around Miyagi prefecture and the southern part of Iwate prefecture). Originally installed on the wall or pillar by carpenter or plasterer as the traditional local housewarming custom. This piece was made of the wall mud (same as the house’s wall) based on the thick wooden board, installed shells for its eyes probably (though unidentified because of covered thick soot). Remains of such frangible wall mud type is very important, and again very rare today. Meiji period, 19th century, Japan. In soot-covered condition, and some flaking as is.
