KAMAGAMI-SAMA OF TOHOKU 02 (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Very rare votive mingei folk mask as the guardian god of kitchen called ‘Kamagami-sama’ (or just ‘Kamagami’) seen only in the exclusive area in Tohoku region (around Miyagi prefecture and the southern part of Iwate prefecture). Originally installed on the wall or pillar by carpenter or plasterer as the traditional local housewarming custom. This piece was made of the wall mud with straw (same as the house’s wall) and was directly installed on the pillar as a part of house. The eyes seem to be installed clamshells. Left eye is broken, and some flaking as is as seen. Remains of such frangible wall mud type is very important, and again very rare today. Meiji period, 19th century, Japan.
