LION HEAD AS GOD, Edo period



Antique Japanese Wooden Shishi Lion Head Edo period  (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – ‘Shishigashira’ (Shishi lion head) called ‘Gongen-sama’ in Tohoku region is the one of Japanese god image based on the thought from ‘Shinbutsu-shugo’ (the amalgamation of Buddhism with Shinto), then popularized to be used for ‘Shishimai’ (traditional shishi lion dance) as the one of folk entertainment in later years. This Shishigashira is also the unique legacy of folk religion from Sakata city in Yamagata prefecture as its provenance, worshiped by the local people as god before abolition of customary Shinbutsu-shugo by the Meiji Restoration which has the emperor as president who has religious power like before the introduction of Buddhism into Japan.
