MANUAL OF CRIMINAL TATTOOS (Dealer: titcoRet) – Japanese hand-copied manuscript documenting methods of tattooing criminals as a form of punishment, originally based on Edo-period records but transcribed in the Meiji–Taishō era (late 19th–early 20th century). The illustrations show regional variations in punitive tattoo designs, with inscriptions beside each figure identifying the corresponding locale. Later sections provide detailed notes on measurements and placement. Notable examples include stark inscriptions such as inu (“dog”) and aku (“evil”) tattooed directly on the face or arms. Paper scroll, approx. 13.5 × 250 cm (5.3 × 98.4 in). Age-related wear and deterioration, as shown.
