EMA WITH MATCHLOCK GUN (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Japanese worshipper’s wooden tablet dedicated to the shrine called ‘Ema’ (lit. ‘Horse picture’), with imitation of matchlock gun made of wood and rusty iron as very rare motif hardly seen, probably by ‘matagi’ (traditional winter hunters in Tohoku region) for praying one’s safety of hunting or improvement in shooting skill. 19th – early 20th century. Board: approx. 297 x 250mm (11.69 x 9.84in)
