BENKEI (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – ‘Benkei’ as a Japanese local mingei folk art piece of hanging bamboo/straw cooking device for making preserved food of skewered fishes by smoke of sunken hearth. Named from its skewered figure itself which reminds of arrow-sticking death of ‘Benkei’ (a famous historic Japanese warrior monk, 1155-1189) in a battle scene. Such type shaped like a Japanese Buddhist temple bell is unique and interesting. Early 20th century. approx. H 40cm (15.74in)
