MOKUJIKI-BUTSU FUDO-MYOO (Dealer: tayutafu) – Wooden ‘Fudo-Myoo’ (Acala (The God of Fire)) statue of ‘Mokujikibutsu’ (Mokujiki-style Buddhist image) carved by Buddhist monk who take particular ascetic practice not allowed to eat heated foods (meat, rice, and vegetable) but only nuts or fruits called ‘Mokujikikai’. The word of ‘Mokujiki’ is literally “Eating wood”, and its aim of ‘Mokujikikai’ is to become ‘Sokushinbutsu’ (Mummified Buddha).
Signed at backside. In fine condition, though a lack of sword in the right hand as seen.

Showa period, 20th century, Japan. approx. H 24cm (9.44in), W 10cm (3.93in), D 6cm (2.36in)
