MONKEY-FACE SUMITSUBO

 

 

Uncompleted wood carving monkey head inkline reel (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Wood carving monkey head ink pad as Japanese carpenter’s tool called ‘sumitsubo’, but aesthetically uncompleted with black-ink painting of its monkey body at side and ‘okame’ (homely woman) face at backside. Such tools of elaborate design were often made by the owner (carpenter) himself as the traditional custom of being an accomplished carpenter. Meiji – early Showa period, early 20th century. approx. H 29cm (11.41in)
