PAPER-MACHE KUWAE MASK (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – ‘Kuwae-men’ (paper-mache mask worn to hold backside projection in mouth) for rural theatrical performance. Early 20th century (or could be earlier), Japan. Probably a blind man with loose and disheveled hair, or sort of a caricatured ghost. In such damaged condition, with lack of hair supposed to be. approx. L 17.5cm (6.88in)
