PRIMITIVE HYOTTOKO MASK (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Wood carving clown mask with distorted mouth called ‘Hyottoko’, Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan. approx. 20 x 12.5cm (7.87 x 4.92in)
Origin of the name of ‘Hyottoko’ from the blowing-up face of ‘Hifuki-otoko’ (Guardian god of stove) as main theory.
