SHINSHO (Dealer: Jinta) – Old Japanese Buddhist wood carving statue of ‘Shinsho’ (Divine general who protect Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru, the Buddha of Healing)), Edo period (1603-1868), approx. H 26 x 11 x 7cm (10.23 x 4.33 x 2.75in). Usually such war god has anger looks like a demmon, but unusually and uniquely has such primitive cuteness as well, as this is a ‘Minshubutsu’ (lit.‘Folk Buddha’) carved by an amateur as non-professional Buddhist sculptor, with rustic and dignified presence as is.
