SHISHI DOG OF GNARL (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Wood carving Japanese okimono of open-mouthed ‘komainu’ guardian dog as ‘a’ of a pair (relationship) of ‘a-un’ (inspiration and expiration, or alpha and omega)), applied its natural gnarl to the main form (skeleton). 19th century or a little later. According to ancient Japanese tree worship, fallen-down sacred trees were often used for carving god images, so that probably it would be also the one made from such a sacred tree as the remains of this custom.
