HEMP CLOTH OF SHISHIMAI (Dealer: hotoke) – Aged tubular costume of ‘Shishimai’ (Japanese folk performing arts of dance with shishi lion mask), as rare type of hemp textile pulling over a solo dancer’s upper body designed with auspicious pattern of ‘Keman-mon’ (Design of shishi lion’s curly hair as the symbol of sun).
Quite a primitive and raw local mingei piece as seen, though its provenance unidentified. In used, patched (with silk), used, patched, used,… handed down, and aesthetically well-used condition as is. 19th century. approx. 151 x 83cm (59.44 x 32.67in).
