SHOKI – Japanese roof tile statue as plague-queller (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Japanese tile statue of ‘Shoki’ (‘Zhong Kui’ as traditional Chinese deity said to prevent plagues and ward off evil beings) displayed on the house roof as talisman. Early Showa period, 20th century. Made by tile craftsman with same material of its roof tile, as differently unique and pure folk taste of Shoki, if compared to the one by specialist sculptor of Buddhist statues (Busshi). In fine condition as seen. approx. H 30cm (11.81in)
