RE-AL (Dealer: hotoke) – Two three-dimensional wooden kanji characters, “HON” and “MONO,” taken from an old five-character signboard that once belonged to a Japanese dyeing shop. Shōwa period, mid-20th century. Together, they form “HONMONO,” meaning “REAL” or “GENUINE” in Japanese.
HON: approx. 34 × 29.5 × 2.5 cm (13.4 × 11.6 × 1 in).
MONO: approx. 33 × 30.5 × 2.8 cm (13 × 12 × 1.1 in).
“HON” can suggest an origin, essence, or book, while “MONO” can mean a thing, object, or stuff. Separated from their original context, the two characters take on a different kind of presence. Originally used outdoors. Age-related damage including wood deterioration, cracks, and peeling paint is present. Condition as shown.
