SUBSTITUTE DOLLS (Dealer: titcoRet) – A pair of Japanese substitute dolls housed in a wooden zushi (portable shrine), made to receive misfortune in place of a newborn child and kept within the home for protection. Miyagi Prefecture, early Shōwa period (early 20th century). Made of wood, paper, and tōso (paulownia wood powder mixed with paste). Zushi approx. 25.2 × 26.5 × 14.5 cm (9.9 × 10.4 × 5.7 in). Simple wooden strips have been nailed across the sides of the zushi, apparently to keep the dolls from “escaping,” though they can still be removed. The red-painted doll may have lost its hair at a later date. The pair represents male and female figures. Age-related wear is present. Condition as shown.
