VOTIVE STONE MONKEY (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Seated stone monkey sculpture with spread legs in the ‘gassho’ praying pose with folded hands for the safe childbirth based on the unique local folk belief (as borrowing the stone monkey from shrine, then offering the new stone monkey to the shrine when fulfilled the wishing). Showa period, 20th century, Japan. Although there are various types of such monkey, this is the unique one with such refined and soft like egg-shaped maternity carving and red-painted female genitalia.
