EMA OF YAMA NO KAMI (Dealer: Sezuan antiques & art) – Worshipper’s wooden tablet dedicated for the shrine, called ‘Ema’ (lit. ‘Horse picture’) painted with ‘Komagata’ horse god, ‘Inari’ fox gods, and unusual figure of ‘Yama no kami’ mountain god with hatchet and broadaxe for mountain work. Tohoku region, Japan. Early 20th century. approx. 60.7 x 43.6 x 1.7cm (23.89 x 17.16 x 0.66in)
Besides the codified certain icons of Shintoism or Buddhism, such primitive figure and presence of ‘Yama no kami’ still lurks deeply in the mind of Japanese people as the kami (god) based on their uncodified religious faith.
Crack and repair at center part, and damage at frame as seen.
