COURTESAN NAMED HELL (Dealer: titcoRet) – A hanging scroll depicting a courtesan known as Jigoku Tayū. Abducted by bandits in her youth, she is said to have worn robes depicting scenes of hell, receiving guests while chanting Buddhist prayers. Long associated with the tension between earthly desire and spiritual awakening. Japan, Shōwa period (20th century). Approx. 189 × 53 cm (74.4 × 20.9 in). Tears present. Condition as shown.
