LUCKY TEA KETTLE TANUKI (Dealer: hotoke) – A unique and charming vintage pottery okimono of a tanuki (raccoon dog) emerging from a whimsical tea kettle. Shōwa period, 20th century, Japan. Approx. 35 × 32 × H 31 cm (13.8 × 12.6 × 12.2 in). References the Japanese folktale ‘Bunbuku Chagama’, in which a rescued tanuki transforms into a tea kettle and brings great fortune to its benefactor. Such figures are regarded as symbols of luck, prosperity, protection, and success in business. Fine vintage condition, with inborn kiln flaws at the bases of the feet from the firing process (as shown). Signed on the base, though the maker is unidentified.
